What does music look like to you?
I have sent all of my students home with a listening assignment to complete while I am on holidays. This is meant to be a fun, simple exercise to get them thinking about music in a different way and to expose them to a work they may not otherwise have listened to.
The work is Stravinsky’s The Firebird! (Click here for the YouTube link)
The assignment is to listen to the music and express how that music makes them feel through visual art. The art can take the form of anything from a realistic drawing to an abstract painting to a sculpture – the result is entirely up to the student. They just need to be able to explain the connection between their art and the music.
Then they get to choose their own music – any style or genre – and repeat the exercise.
Don’t forget to listen a second time and figure out what techniques the composer used to make you feel a certain way.

Have fun! I can’t wait to see the artwork when I return.
