The Joy of Sharing and Old Songs

“Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue…”
“When You’re Smiling…”
“It’s A Long Way To Tipperary…”

So many wonderful old songs. Songs that many people do not know now.
I learned most of them while my grandparents were in an old age home. They were sung often, along with many others, and all of the residents knew them. Time is moving on and even the current residents of the old age homes are more familiar with the next generation of songs.

But those old songs still bring a smile.

On Tuesday I accompanied the Arnprior Community Choir to The Grove, a long-term care facility in Arnprior. We sang some songs we have been practicing for our upcoming spring concert and interspersed many of these old favourites. And the smiles, applause and appreciation for taking the time to visit was a wonderful lift to our spirits!

When my grandparents were in a similar facility I visited often and would frequently play for the residents, either formally or informally. Since then I’m sorry to say it I have not gone very often. Really not at all. And I think that needs to change.

This morning I was wondering “What would a random visit bring to the residents’ lives? and what would I learn from going?”

Most of the residents are not able to get out anymore and often feel isolated. When visitors come it gives them something to look forward to, something new to think about.

As for what I could learn… I think I would learn more about generosity but I also think I would open myself up to learning numerous random lessons from people who have lived a long time, in a very different time. People who have learned a lot and loved a lot and have so much knowledge to pass on to whom ever is willing listen.

I think my life could use more giving and I am always looking to learn new things.

How amazing would it be if my students were able to benefit too? What would happen if we went out and shared our music with our community?
